In Roman mythology, Amulius was the brother of Numitor, the king of Alba Longa. He usurped his brother’s throne and forced his brother’s daughter, Rhea Silvia, to become a Vestal Virgin so she could not bear children who would challenge his rule. However, Rhea Silvia was impregnated by Mars and gave birth to twin boys, Romulus and Remus. Amulius ordered them to be thrown into the Tiber River but they were rescued by a she-wolf and eventually overthrew Amulius and restored their grandfather to the throne.
The name Amulius has been used in literature since at least the 16th century. In William Shakespeare’s play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, one of the characters is named Amulius. The name also appears in other works such as John Milton’s epic poem “Paradise Lost” and Alexander Pope’s poem “The Rape of the Lock”.
